I love making things practical and simple. Sometimes when we think about developing a new habit, starting a new project or beginning counseling it can feel like such an arduous task. Let me help take a load off and let’s talk beauty and blend it with a bit of brains. Yes, it’s true. You can totally use your go to skincare routine to regulate your nervous system. Here’s how…
According to Stephen Porges, Ph.D. (an expert on the human nervous system and developer of Polyvagal theory), our nervous system has three different states. These three states can be thought of like a ladder and every day we often travel up and down this ladder. At the very bottom of the ladder is the state called the Dorsal Vagal also known as “shut down”. We find ourselves in this state when our brain and body assesses that we do not have what it takes to cope with a present situation.
The next “rung” up the ladder is called the Sympathetic state also known as “fight/mobilization.” We find ourselves in this state when our brain and body assesses that we are in danger. In this state we mobilize to fight whatever at the moment is perceived as a threat to us.
At the top of the ladder is the Ventral Vagal state, also known as “engagement.” This is where our nervous system is in it’s most relaxed state. It is here where we feel the most connected to the world, hopeful and grounded.
All three of these states are helpful and a part of every human being’s experience. However, some of us may be stuck at the middle and lower parts of the ladder and need some help feeling connected, relaxed and grounded. The awesome thing about polyvagal theory and our nervous systems is that there are activities that we can consciously do or develop awareness around that can shift us out of our present state.
Having a consistent routine can do wonders for our nervous systems. Routines can provide a sense of safety, predictability and grounding. Blending routine with activities such as skin care that can be done slowly and mindfully can be just the thing your nervous system needs to shift to a Ventral Vagal/engaged state.
So what does this look like? Say you have a simple 3 step skin care routine of using a cleanser, toner and moisturizer. Take your time at each skin care step and notice the temperature of the products you are using. Are they room temperature? Are they cold? How does your cleanser feel in your hands as you prepare to apply it on your face? Is there anything you could do as you apply your products to feel even more connected to yourself and your environment?
I would say that it can be very worth while to think through ways you can make parts of your daily routine like skin care more personal, thoughtful and intentional. Simply checking in with yourself and wondering where you may be on the ladder can be so powerful. Now pair that with slowing down and attending to wherever you may be-mindfully and without judgment . You’re now well on your way to regulating your nervous system.
